  • Static Electricity impact on vinyl records and reel to reel tape transfers

Dielectric media substrates (like vinyl, mylar, ceramics and other insulators) have a propensity to accumulate charge on their surface due to their interaction with another good dielectric, air. This can result in occasional static discharges from the media to the pickup (cartridge in the case of records and the playback head in the case of reel to reel tapes and sound like tick sounds. This is especially true with virgin vinyl records and / or virgin magnetic tape. It can be minimized by maintaining the relative humidity above 35-40 percent depending on room temperature. If these static discharges persist on the transfer, the use of the EZ impulse filter with emphasis on the use of the Narrow Crackle filter (the right-most slider). Even tapes or records that have never been played before may suffer from static electricity discharge but can be easily repaired with this filter. The narrow crackle filter can also be found under it's own heading and has more range of controllability than the one found in the EZ Impulse Filter. Give them a try should you encounter tiny ticks on clean media.
