And even though they may seem to be built like a tank, they are a short lived tank. The Bose 901's, 601's & the small 301's all have a "defect", as the drivers used in all of them have foam surrounds instead of longer lasting rubber.

Ummm. Not really. There are a couple of companies that specialize in replacement surrounds for speakers that that have "speaker rot". Even using the speakers hard (as in a nightclub) can cause the surrounds to deteriorate fairly rapidly. The first time you do the replacement, is a bit dicey, but after awhile I got to the point where I could do it in a few minutes.
