Which LP stylus?

Does anyone have a rule of thumb for favorite stylus types on different types and conditions of LP records? I have a good collection of different cartridges, with different stylus shapes...from my past days in the hi-fi business. I have found that the different types work better with different records, but the design of my tone-arm makes trial-and-error experimentation very tedious. Any advice??
