That fixed the playback problem! The sound card was set to multi-media. I changed it to WDM. I must have changed it when I was trying to get it to record. Still won't record, but dummy plug in line-in does change outcome from error msg to blank recording.

That's good to hear (no pun intended). Wouldn't a dummy plug on the input just record nothing? Or, maybe there is a mixer control with the sound card software that allows a different pathway for recording. Not sure

On many systems, the sound card detects when a jack is plugged into the Line Input or Microphone Input. The presence of the dummy plug on the line input means that the system will think that a signal is present and try to record.
Since the plug is a short, nothing will show up on the recording.
Try and input from your phonograph.
