  • Multi-Filter anomalies

I want to let you know I like DCM alot, but have been having on going inconsistences with the multi-filter. In my current setup I use an impulse-CNF-harmonic combination.

First, when I run preview and toggle the bypass box on and off, the left and right channels appear to switch sides.

Second, I save settings in MF by double clicking on the individual filters, setting them the way I want them, previewing, then saving the settings in MF. However sometimes those settings don't seem to stick. And when processing a wave file MF does not always follow the saved settings.

If after selecting a saved setting, I double click on the individual filters sometimes the settings will be correct and sometimes not. Tonight for example, I made an adjustment to the CNF for 20db reduction with a certain curve, but even after repeated saves, when I re-opened MF and click on CNF the filter setting was at 90db.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks, Alan

    Alan:

You are not alone! What you write about is an exact duplicate of what I consistently experience with a Multi-Filter setting. Add to this, I get the frequent system crashes as well.

This commonplace problem has gotten so irritating that I'm about to install Windows XP which, I've heard, has cut down on the system crashes.

I'm currently using Windows 98SE. What operating system are you using?

As a suggestion, you might try cleaning your file with the CNF first, and then running the cleaned file in a Multi-Filter setting. See if this works any better for you, Alan. Good luck.

      Alan:

After spending much time talking with Curtis at Tracer Technology, I think I have our problem fixed.

The situation we've experienced is caused (in my case) by several things: repeatedly saving each newly created preset in each respective filter (in this case, the CNF) jammed the capacity of given presets. That's why sometimes your saved pre-set took, and others, why it never showed up again. For this, you'll need to go to C:Windows and find the DCpresets.ini file. Left click on it and rename it. This should bring up a completely blank (default setting with no presets) preset list the next time you go to use any of the filters.

Next, and call me naiive by never before doing so, but running the Windows update from your Start button (my update download took over an hour)will work wonders on your operating system.

Now, for the first time in as many months, I'm finally able to run the CNF in its own setting without having to build it in a Multi Filter. This means, no right/left channel switching, and, best of all, no system crashes.

I hope this helps you out, Alan.

        Re: Multi-Filter anomalies

This is a good point re-enforce. There is a 65KB limit to the size of the presets.ini file. (leftover from Windows 16bit days) If you are having erratic problems with saving and recalling presets, then this is a good place to check first. Look at the size of the \windows\dcmillpresets.ini file. If it is close to 65k then you have most likely lost some presets. You can either just rename it, so there is no preset file, in which case Millennium will create a new file, or copy over the original file from the install (re-install). Of course you will loose any of your own presets in the process, but it is likely that they are corrupt anyway.
We are fixing this problem in the next version of DCart. The preset scheme will be completly revised to eliminate any limitations, as well as be able to share presets with others.
