  • Edison disc's

I was reciently given 20 rather thick old records with "Edison" labels on them. What type of equipment is needed to play them? I have tried using a standard turntable (one of the Esoteric Sound Restoration units) but get nothing but noise...even when adjusting speedand the tone arm pressure...Any advice would be deeply appreciated...Thanks TG

    HI Thomas,

It sounds like you may have some old "hill and dale" or vertical cut recordings.

Try recording them in as stereo with DC, and then use the "File Conversion" filter with a Left minus Right setting, this should minimise the noise and give you the signal that you are after, then allowing you to use DC to perform its magic

      thomas -

Also, make certain you have the correct needle size. There are various places on the web where you can find different needle sizes. I found a huge difference in making transfers of some old Edisons when I replaced the cartridge with one designed for that type of record. Sometimes a regular stylus gets "lost" in the grooves or rides on top of them if there's a mismatch between stylus size and the record groove.

Jason and Dan, Sorry for the long reply time...I had to rebuild my 'puter when the MoBo decided to self destruct in a flash of light and puff of smoke.....
Anyway, I aquired a proper sized needle and ctg. then began experimenting with both your suggestions and the results were very satisfying ( for me at least!) Thanks for the suggestions and again, I apologise for the delayed response....Thomasgeorge
