  • Finding elusive impulse noise on 78s

Here is a method to find elusive impulse noise on 78 rpm records or Edison Diamond Discs:

    1. Put the DC8 system into classic edit mode

    2. Apply the proper EQ to the transfer using the Virtual Phono Preamplifier (VPP)

    3. De-click the file in the normal manner using the EZ Impulse filter

    4. Make the Destination the Source.

    5. Put the system into file sync mode (View Menu)

    6. Bring up the High Pass Filter (HP Filter under Filter Menu)

    7. Set the filter for 6000 Hz and 24 dB/Octave

    8. Run the Filter

    9. In the destination workspace and to the right thereof, move the right-hand slider downwards until you see some noise signals.

    10. Elusive impulses can then be seen in the destination workspace.

    11. Zoom in on them and highlight the impulse noise.

    12. Use the manual interpolator to eliminate it (the "I" key on your keyboard)

This is an interesting idea, Craig. I'm going to have to try it. I'm wondering if it could work for lps, etc. as well. f I understand it, you'd have to set the filter above 6kHz for LPS, but it might be doable. Anyway, I think it' worth a try.

      HI Dan,

Yes, it should work on LPs too, but I have not tried it. I would guess that the filter would need to be set around 10 KHz to 20 kHz.
