tricks for finding a tape splice or digital edit?

Are there any special techniques to find an edit?
I have a live audience tape where one of the musicians does an impromptu bass solo, but when it was released commercially the bass solo was cut out (most likely to keep it to a one disc release). I'm trying to put it back exactly where it goes and combine the audience recording with the commercial release, but it's very difficult to pinpoint exactly where it happens because it starts in the middle of an impromptu portion by all of the musicians.

Are there any tell-tale signs?

Hi Dan,

I think that I would look for a step-function change in the spectrogram display - - - that may be the best clue. Hard to see these things in the time display if the edit was done carefully.

Yes, they're very hard to find if a cross-fade was done...
