  • Unwanted Audio

A member of a law enforcement agency just reminded me of a feature in DC Forensics 10 that isnt much talked about, but to them is very important.
The problem is that many of their recordings can run a hour or more. They can contain pieces of audio from bystanders or others who, for many reasons, they dont want to play in court. So why not just cut out the unwanted parts? You can easily do that, of course, but it has consequences.
For example, having two (or more) versions of the recording that are different lengths can lead to confusion. "Does the confession start at 1:15:31 or 0:2:16?" "Which version are you talking about, the full length one, or the cut one?"
You can alleviate this problem by not cutting and by creating an accurate index of all the important parts of the recording, but that still leaves us with things we dont want to play in court.
There are two answers in DC Forensics 10. One is at Edit/Paste/Insert Beep. This will replace any audio with a pure 440hz tone. The suspect audio is not hiding behind the tone, its replaced by it.
The second way is with the voice garbler. This will allow what sounds like a voice, but it will not be understandable or identifiable. It also cannot be reversed since what is actually be done to the audio is not publicly documented and is highly depended on the settings you choose.
    So there you go
