The Charlie Stiles Trio
Live at the Cranford Hotel, 1966
Here are 10 light Jazz classics recorded live at the Cranford Hotel bar and restaurant in 1966 (Cranford, NJ). The trio consists of Charlie Stiles on keys, with a double bass and drums (the latter performers are not documented). It was recorded live (you can hear patrons in the background) on a Magnecord 1028 at 15 ips on half-track stereo tape. 4 Telefunken U47 microphones were used and mixed to mono via a home brew tube based mixer. The master tape was then used to cut a master and a few hundred monophonic LPs were pressed. Very few of these sold, a bit surprising to learn after you hear the quality of the performances. These downloads were taken from one of the few original pressings that I still had, with the master magnetic tape lost to time. The vinyl that I used was chosen out of three that I had and was never previously played prior to the digital transfer. The three vinyl LPs that I had were not in their outer album covers, but just in white sleeves with no documentation therein. (Craig Maier)
